Paphiopedilum (abbreviated Paph.) Yang-Ji Hawk, a primary hybrid between Paph. sanderianum and Paph. adductum var. anitum, was registered by Yang-Ji Orchids (Taiwan) in 2009.

The pod parent, Paph. sanderianum 'Long River' has one of the longest flower petals of the species, known to reach ≈ 30 inches (80 cm) or more in length. The pollen parent, Paph. adductum var. anitum 'Dark Chocolate', is a variety of Paph. adductum with blue-green leaves and dark (almost black) dorsal sepal.

This stunning multi-floral Paph is a remarkable remake by Mr. Shen, who is an educator by profession. He has one of the best private Paph collections in Taiwan and has been collecting the best Paphs from USA, Japan, and Germany to build his breeding stock. He is not known outside of Taiwan, but many commercial growers from the island purchase plants from him for hybridizing, even some of the top growers in Japan. Unlike commercial hybridizers, he doesn’t shy away from doing more basic crosses like remakes of primary hybrids. His greenhouse has no evaporative cooling—just a roof to cover the plants from rain, so plants are toughened not pampered.

Paphs detest soggy growing medium; pot in well-draining media. Grow them in bright light and warm temperature with high humidity and good air circulation, on a windowsill or under lights. As with all Paphs, its roots are sensitive to salt buildup from excess fertilizer which causes leaf tips to turn brown. It is a good practice to flush the medium with fresh, clean water once a month and repot Paphs in fresh media every year.

Very easy to grow and bloom and does not need a cooling in winter like Paph. rothschildianum. In fact, they are most happy growing alongside novelty Phalaenopsis. According to Mr. Shen, the long-lasting flowers have long spiraling petals up to 60 cm (23.6 in) long and with dark color on dorsal and pouch from the Paph. adductum var. anitum 'Dark Chocolate' parent. Definitely deserving of inclusion in any orchid collection, large or small! Do not miss this opportunity to buy this remarkable remake. Highly recommended. Looking forward to some future awards.
