Description

Paph. Mint Chocolate, an easy to grow, miniature, primary hybrid was created and registered by Orchid Zone in 1994. We are very delighted to have this remarkable remake from the premier Paph hybridizer Mr. Hung Sheng Bear of Taiwan. Mr. Bear is the past president of Taiwan Paphiopedilum Society (TPS). He has the best Paphiopedilum species collection in Taiwan, if not all of Asia. This gorgeous remake was created using superior parents. The last time we offered this was in 2015. We are thrilled to once again offer our favorite fragrant miniature Paph!

The pod parent, Paph. malipoense 'Bear Giant', as the name suggests, is one of the largest in his collection with firm substance and long-lasting, fragrant flowers. The pollen parent, Paph. godefroyae 'Chocolate Drops', is a compact plant with well-shaped flower having heavy substance and unusual chocolate-brown spots. This magnificent hybrid has compact leaves with wonderful variegated markings and deep purple-red on the underside; and large, long-lasting, flowers with heavy substance. Some may be fragrant, having influence from the Paph. malipoense parent. These vigorous plants can bloom in a 3-inch pot.

Paphs detest soggy growing medium; pot in well-draining media. Grow these plants in intermediate light and warm temperature with high humidity and good air circulation. Water twice per week for best results. As with all Paphs, its roots are sensitive to salt buildup from excess fertilizer which causes leaf tips to turn brown. It is a good practice to flush the medium with fresh, clean water once a month and repot Paphs in fresh media every year. Excellent for growing under lights, on a windowsill, or in an orchid cabinet. Plants are weather tolerant, pest and disease resistant. With Paph. godefroyae in its background, these plants do not need a cooling period like Paph. malipoense. Highly recommended for beginners and Paph collectors.
