Coelogyne (abbreviated Coel.) schilleriana is found in Thailand and Myanmar in valleys and on ridges at elevations around 200 to 1200 meters as a miniature to small sized, warm to cool growing epiphyte. It is rarely seen in the marketplace. This remarkable miniature has close-set, compressed pseudobulbs that produce a pair of 5-inch leaves. Short inflorescences carry 1 to 2 large, showy, 2.5-inch flowers in the spring. Flowers have green sepals and narrow green petals; stunning large lip is basally white with red-trimmed side lobes; ruffled apical lobes are creamy yellow with irregular orange markings.
This species grows best mounted but can be grown in a hanging basket or a pot with a mix of fine fir bark, tree fern fiber, and perlite or pot in sphagnum moss. Grow in intermediate to warm temperatures in partial shade with good humidity and air circulation. Water and fertilize regularly during the summer, about once every two days and gradually reduce in the winter. Stop fertilizer in the fall. It is normal for the leaves will turn yellow and fall off during winter. Water about once every two to three weeks in winter and gradually increase watering as new roots begin to show. Highly recommended for species collectors.
