Description

Oeceoclades (pronounced ee-see-oh-CLAY-dees) gracillima, sometimes known in horticulture by the synonym Oeceoclades roseovariegata, is endemic to Madagascar. Oeceoclades, collectively known as the monk orchids, is mostly terrestrial in habit found growing in humus between crevices in rocks or in semi-deciduous forests. “Roseovariegata” means rose + variegated, referring to the pink and silver mottled, variegated leaves.

It is difficult to believe that this highly unusual plant is an orchid! It is a miniature with pseudobulbs that are about 1-inch tall and a natural leaf span up to 3 inches. The flowers are small, odorless, and greenish brown with a white inner with pink spots. It is primarily for its foliage, resembling pink and red colored snake skin. The new leaves are green when it first comes out but turn coral pink mature.

This plant prefers bright light and drier conditions. This equates to conditions similar to Cattleya.

Pot in media containing a mix of fine fir bark, perlite and charcoal. Water about once a week and let dry before watering again. It is an easy grower, though it grows quite slowly. Grow it year round in bright light but not in full blazing sun. It can grow alongside Cattleya as they have similar requirements. Perfect for growing on a bright window sill, under lights, or in an orchid cabinet. Carefree and low maintenance.
