We anxiously waited several years for this new vigorous strain of Paphiopedilum (abbreviated Paph) emersonii. We were extremely delighted to finally receive these remarkable seedlings created by the renowned Paph hybridizer, Mr. Hung Sheng Bear, using two of his best specimens. Mr. Bear is the past president of Taiwan Paphiopedilum Society (TPS). He has the best Paphiopedilum species collection in Taiwan, if not all of Asia.
Paph. emersonii is found in Yunnan province in China and northern Vietnam. It has leathery, glossy green leaves; the erect 6-inch spike is covered with downy white hairs bears a single heavy-textured, long-lasting, velvety, 3.5-inch, fragrant flower with disproportionately large white petals, smaller white dorsal sepal is hooded, curving forward over the lip, semi-translucent creamy pouch fading to egg yolk yellow with age, spotted with deep red-purple within, staminode bright yellow with reddish markings.
It has a reputation of being a slow grower and a recalcitrant bloomer. It needs a cool winter rest but the night temperature does not need to as cold as for Paph. micranthum and Paph. armenianum. These seedlings are about 3 years out of the flask and its leaf span is over 4 inches. For comparison, a near mature size plant has a 6-inch plus leaf span and at least 4 years out of flask. This species is slow growing initially when they are out of the flask, but once they reach seedling size they are easy and grow well alongside novelty Phalaenopsis. This species should be watered year round and given even fertilizer while growing and a lessening as growth slows.
Paphs detest soggy growing medium; pot in well-draining media. Grow these plants in intermediate light and warm temperature with high humidity and good air circulation. Water twice per week for best results. As with all Paphs, its roots are sensitive to salt buildup from excess fertilizer which causes leaf tips to turn brown. It is a good practice to flush the medium with fresh, clean water once a month and repot Paphs in fresh media every year. Excellent for growing under lights, on a windowsill, or in an orchid cabinet. Plants are weather tolerant, pest and disease resistant. Highly recommended for the Paph species collector. Limited quantity. Rarely available and sure to sell out. Don’t miss out!

LEASE NOTE: Since this is a Seedling Population (not a Mericlone which produces exact duplicates), the picture is for illustration purposes only. No two plants will be the same from this cross, and they will flower in a range of possibilities coming from the two parents.
