Description

This impressive remake of Paph. Mount Toro was made using the awarded clone 'Memoria Dr. Henry Wallbrunn’ AM/AOS as the pod parent. At the time of the award in 2005, it had six flowers and four buds on two inflorescences; very good flower color, size, and shape; firm substance; shiny texture; and compact growing plant.

Paphiopedilum (abbreviated Paph.) philippinense is native to the Philippines and northern Borneo as a large sized, hot growing terrestrial or epiphyte. It is found at elevations up to 500 meters. Paph. philippinense is a popular long-petaled multifloral Paph species. It can have up to 7 flowers per inflorescence and makes a beautiful display plant. Paph. stonei is endemic to Borneo, found near Kuching, Sarawak, at elevations from 200 to 2,300 feet. It is a large sized hot growing terrestrial. It has green, glossy, strap-shaped leaves, 30-inch long, 3 to 5 flowered inflorescence that blooms in the summer.

This seed grown population has flower color and compact growth habit influenced by the Paph. philippinense 'Memoria Dr. Henry Wallbrunn’ AM/AOS parent; the wonderful ivory colored dorsal petal and the distinctive curve of the lateral petals are influenced by the Paph. stonei parent. It is one of the earliest spring-blooming multifloral Paph with long-lasting flowers. Mature plants put on a spectacular display of flowers make these plants very rewarding.

Multifloral Paphs such as Paph. Mount Toro require brighter light than most other Paphs. These plants can grow alongside with Cattleyas. The like warm temperatures (80°- 90°F) during the day in the summer and nights in the 60s. They will tolerate temperature down to 55°F on winter nights but must be kept dry to prevent rot. Fertilize regularly with a balanced fertilizer at half-strength. Multifloral Paphs benefit from the addition of calcium. This is usually supplied by the calcium occurring in municipal tap water. If you have very soft water or use reverse osmosis water you may want to add a calcium supplement to your regime such as adding crushed oyster shells into the mix. Let these plants dry out slightly between thorough watering. It is a good practice to flush with clean plain water once a month to prevent fertilizer salt build up. Use large grade fir bark for large plants. Repotting is usually done every other year. Can be grown outdoors under light shade in hot climates such as Southern Florida where winters are frost free and above 55°F at night. Highly receommended.
