Paph. Lady Rothschild (rothschildianum 'Fly Eagle' AM/AOS x Lady Isabel ' Norman' HCC/AOS), nf684
This is another example of cutting edge Paphiopedilum (abbreviated Paph.) breeding. Paph. Lady Rothschild was originally created and registered by Frank Booth in 1994. Paph. Lady Rothschild is a cross of Paph. Lady Isobel (rothschildianum x stonei) that is back crossed onto Paph. rothschildianum, giving it a double shot of Paph. rothschildianum. These seedlings will look like an improved Paph. Lady Isobel with the stronger Paph. rothschildianum influence. Paph. stonei in the background gives it the creamy white color on the dorsal sepal and adds extra flower stance and heat tolerance.
The pod parent, Paph. rothschildianum 'Fly Eagle' AM/AOS, at the time of award had five flowers over 31-cm natural spread and one bud on two inflorescences; sepals creamy yellow with longitudinal lines of purple color extending from the base to apex; petals also yellow with mahogany spots interspersed between the purplish lines. Paph. rothschildianum is called the “King of Paphs.” Its impressive, large, stately flowers always draw attention at orchid shows. They can be slow to reach blooming size as seedlings, but once they reach maturity they flower reliably every year. As the plants get larger the flowers become even more impressive. The pollen parent, Paph. Lady Isobel 'Norman' HCC/AOS, at the time of award had five shapely, richly colored flowers held in an unusually stately fashion on one very strong 79-cm erect inflorescence; sepals and petals cream yellow with deep mahogany stripes; pouch rich mauve with darker venation; substance firm; texture satiny.
Paphs detest soggy growing medium; pot in well-draining media. Grow them in bright light and warm temperature with high humidity and good air circulation. As with all Paphs, its roots are sensitive to salt buildup from excess fertilizer which causes leaf tips to turn brown. It is a good practice to flush the medium with fresh, clean water once a month and repot Paphs in fresh media every year. This plant reportedly grows well outdoors in South Florida. Can be grown on a bright windsowsill or under lights. New technology advancements in LED lighting now make it possible to bloom and enjoy these plants in the home without a greenhouse.
This remake was made using two exceptional, awarded parents, creating an amazing combination! Looking for 4 – 5 shapely, dark, richly colored flowers with strong, erect inflorescence. This will be a FANGtastic modern Paph. rothschildianum type hybrid. We will only release a limited number of mature size plant with 12-inch leaf span that are at least 5-7 years old. Similar to its Paph. rothschildianum parent, these plants are slow growers but once they reach maturity they flower reliably every year. Highly recommended for all multi-floral Paph lovers.

PLEASE NOTE: Since this is a Seedling Population (not a Mericlone which produces exact duplicates), the picture is for illustration purposes only. No two plants will be the same from this cross, and they will flower in a range of possibilities coming from the two parents.
