Paphiopedilum (abbreviated Paph .) Glaucoliem is a primary hybrid between Paph. glaucophyllum and Paph. liemianum, registered by A. Cotton in 1993. This remarkable remake comes from the premier Paph hybridizer Mr. Hung Sheng Bear of Taiwan. Mr. Bear is the past president of Taiwan Paphiopedilum Society (TPS). He has the best Paphiopedilum species collection in Taiwan, if not all of Asia. This gorgeous award quality remake was created using superior awarded parents. Paph. glaucophyllum 'Bear-2' has a Silver Medal (SM) from TPS; and Paph. liemianum 'Bear' has a Silver Medal (SM) awarded by the Taiwan Orchid Growers Association (TOGA).
Paph. glaucophyllum, found in Sumatra and Java, can flower sequentially for 12 to 18 months on the same spike! Each flower lasts about 3—4 weeks. The plant will often begin a new spike from a new growth before the old spike finishes blooming, making this nearly a perpetual bloomer. Paph. liemianum is found only in northern Sumatra at elevations of 600 to 1000 meters as a small to medium sized, warm growing terrestrial or lithophyte. It is a sequential bloomer that blooms in the late winter and early winter. Its leaves are dark green above and red speckled underneath.
Paph. Glaucoliem is an easy to grow sequential bloomer. It has the best traits of both species parents: wonderful glossy foliage, disease resistance, flower spike can continue to bloom sequentially for 8 months. They grow well alongside Phalaenopsis. Excellent for growing under lights or on a window sill.
Paphs detest soggy growing medium; pot in well-draining media. Grow these plants in intermediate light and warm temperature with high humidity and good air circulation. Water twice per week for best results. As with all Paphs, its roots are sensitive to salt buildup from excess fertilizer which causes leaf tips to turn brown. It is a good practice to flush the medium with fresh, clean water once a month and repot Paphs in fresh media every year. Easy to grow and flower, these plants are perfect for beginners. Excellent for growing under lights or on a windowsill. Highly recommended for beginners and Paph collectors.
