Description

Registered by Chou-Yi Orchids (Taiwan) in 2018, this strain was made using superior parents. This amazing strain combines ease of growing and compact growth habit, which is dominated by Paphiopedilum (abbreviated Paph.) thaianum.

Paph. Chou-Yi Rookie is a new trend in breeding a Brachypetalum with a Coryopedilum to create a compact or miniature (tea cup sized) multi-floral Paph. Paph. Chou-Yi Rookie resembles a miniature Paph. Woluwense (the cross of Paph. niveum with Paph. rothschildianum) but the labellum has more red color. These plants have long-lasting, white flowers that are striped and spotted all over with red veining, making the flowers appear pink.

The pod parent, Paph. thaianum (a member of the Brachypetalum section of the genus) , is an adorable, relatively new, micro-miniature, species from the west coast of Thailand. It is the smallest of the genus with a leaf span of 3 – 4 inches (4 – 10 cm) when fully mature. The pollen parent, Paph. rothschildianum (a member of the  Coryopedilum section of the genus), is called the “King of Paphs.” It produces multiple, impressive, eye-catching, large, stately flowers. Paph. rothschildianum ‘Rex’, is considered one of the best with a First Class Certificate (FCC) from the American Orchid Society (AOS).

These plants do not need a winter cooling and prefer warm to hot temperatures year round. Growers in cold climates report success growing this species on a heat mat in the cooler months. Paphs detest soggy growing medium; pot in well-draining media. Grow them in bright light and warm temperature with high humidity and good air circulation. As with all Paphs, its roots are sensitive to salt buildup from excess fertilizer which causes leaf tips to turn brown. It is a good practice to flush the medium with fresh, clean water once a month and repot Paphs in fresh media every year. Can be grown on a bright windowsill or under lights. We grow this species alongside our novelty Phals and they love warm days and warm nights. Not commonly found in the market. An absolute must-have for any Paph. collection. Limited quantity. Very Highly Recommended! High potential for awards for this remarkable hybrid.

PLEASE NOTE: Since this is a Seedling Population (not a Mericlone which produces exact duplicates), the picture is for illustration purposes only. No two plants will be the same from this cross, and they will flower in a range of possibilities coming from the two parents.
