Brassocatanthe (abbreviated Bct.) Kauai Red Drop was registered by Yamada Nursery (Japan) in 2008. It was created using Cattlianthe (abbreviated) Ctt. Chocolate Drop as the pod parent and Brassanthe (abbreviated Bsn.) Maikai as the pollen parent, which resulted in the progeny taking after Ctt. Chocolate Drop in growth habit. These plants are a remake by Yamada Nursery using the inverse, i.e., Bsn. Maikai as the pod parent and Ctt. Chocolate Drop as the pollen parent. Consequently, the growth habit is now dominated by Bsn. Maikai with strong B. nodosa influence making it easy to grow, floriferous, fragrant, and have a distinctive lip.
Its genetic composition is B. nodosa 25%, C. guttata 25%, Gur. aurantiaca 25%, and Gur. bowringiana 25%. These compact plants are beginner friendly. It is heat tolerant, adapts to a wide range of temperatures and conditions, easy to grow and bloom. Its amazing color, and long-lasting, waxy flower substance comes from Ctt. Chocolate Drop. It can flower 2 – 3 times a year, i.e., on every new growth.
Give bright indirect light, intermediate to warm temperatures, water and fertilize regularly (allow roots to dry a bit). These plants will grow well either in a pot or mounted. Can be grown outdoors year round in areas where summers are hot and winters are mild and frost free. This is soon to be a classic and needs to be in every Cattleya collection. Highly recommended.
