Bc. Yu Toung Star 'Hot Lip' (Tetradip ' Junko' PC/JOS x Morning Glory) , MC2754
Brassocattleya (abbreviated Bc.) YU Toung Star is a new introduction from Yuan Dong Orchids of Taiwan.
It is packed with two of my favorite Cattleya alliance species—Brassavola nodosa (50%) and Cattleya purpurata (27%).
Registered by Stewart Orchids in 1967, the pod parent, Bc. Tetradip was created using Bc. Bonanza and B. nodosa and it might be one of the earliest hybrids crossing B. nodosa onto a complex Cattleya. Stewart Orchids remade a batch of Bc. Tetradip that was exported to Japan in the late 1970s or early 1980s. The clone ‘Junko' was selected among this batch as the best and was awarded PC/JOS. It is a prolific bloomer with strong spikes and has been used extensively in breeding in Asia.
The pollen parent, Bc. Morning Glory, is B. nodosa x C. purpurata. The flowers have white petals and sepals and a pink-striped, trumpet-shaped lip. It can bloom twice a year in spring and fall, and the flowers have a delightful night time fragrance and lasts 6—8 weeks. It is easy to grow and produces multiple growths which quickly form a specimen size.
Bc. Bonanza and C. purpurata contribute to the large size of flowers in this hybrid. C. purpurata also adds cold tolerance. B. nodosa dominates the compact size and shape of the plant and the large, prominent lip with striking color. Plants are fragrant not only at day time but night time too. Excellent for mounting on cork or on a tree outdoors in areas where winters are frost-free and mild like southern Florida. Highly recommended.
