We are very excited to offer this remarkable warm tolerant multi-floral remake from Mr. Bear of Hung Sheng Orchids. Paphiopedilum (abbreviated Paph.) Zycleon was created and registered by H. Doll in 1991. The original cross was made with Paph. rothschildianum as the pod parent and Paph. Pinocchio as the pollen parent. In this remake, Mr. Bear made the inverse cross, i.e., he used Paph. Pinocchio as the pod parent and Paph. rothschildianum as the pollen parent. Paph. rothschildianum is called the “King of Paphs” because of its impressive, large, stately flowers.
The pod parent, Paph. Pinocchio, is one of Mr. Bear’s best—made with his best Paph. glaucophyllum ‘Bear #1’ BM/TOGA and Paph. primulinum ‘Bear’ (see our Item #NF63). The highly acclaimed and awarded Paph. rothschildianum 'Rex' FCC/AOS (considered the best clone) was used as the pollen parent.
This remake is a huge improvement over the original cross with increased flower size contributed by Paph. rothschildianum 'Rex' FCC/AOS and compact size contributed by Paph. Pinocchio. Plants have long-lasting flowers with very attractive foliage. Easy to grow makes this plant excellent for beginners.
Paphs detest soggy growing medium; pot in well-draining media. Grow them in bright light and warm temperature with high humidity and good air circulation. As with all Paphs, its roots are sensitive to salt buildup from excess fertilizer which causes leaf tips to turn brown. It is a good practice to flush the medium with fresh, clean water once a month and repot Paphs in fresh media every year.
Can be grown on a bright windowsill or under lights. Highly recommended and we look forward to some potential awards from this remake using superior parents.
