Description
We are expanding my collection of antelope-type Dendrobiums, and
Dendrobium tangerinum
is one of my favorites among these species.
Dendrobium tangerinum
is a fascinating and easy-to-grow species native to the lowlands of New Guinea. Its long-lasting flowers are striking, featuring a vibrant orange-yellow to orange-red hue, speckled with red-brown or maroon on the sepals, and a lilac callus on the lip. The elongated sepal petals resemble antelope horns, adding to their unique charm. These plants are prolific bloomers, capable of producing up to 20 flowers on a single inflorescence.
As a small to large-sized epiphyte,
Dendrobium tangerinum
thrives in hot to cool conditions, typically growing on small trees or cliff faces at elevations from sea level to 1,250 meters. It features erect, cane-like stems that are slightly swollen at the base, adorned with many oblong-elliptic, leathery leaves concentrated at the upper half. The blooms can occur throughout the year on 14 to 18-inch (35 to 45 cm) long, sheathed inflorescences that emerge from nodes near the apex of leafy canes, showcasing their impressive flower count.
These plants flourish in warm to intermediate temperatures but can tolerate brief periods of heat and dryness. I’ve successfully grown them outdoors, protected from direct sunlight during the summer, even in temperatures reaching 100°F, without any issues. While they can be kept outside during summer, it’s essential to bring them indoors before temperatures drop below 55°F in the fall. During winter, maintain a temperature above 55°F, and provide 12 hours of light if growing under artificial lights. Using a heat mat can help keep the plant active throughout winter and encourage earlier blooming as soon as April. Strong light is essential for optimal flowering.
In southern California, our blooming season runs from July to October during the long, hot days of summer. The flowers emit a delightful sweet honey fragrance and are long-lasting, with the potential for reblooming from older canes.
Dendrobium tangerinum
pairs well with Laelia anceps and Laelia purpurata, as they share similar growing conditions. Highly recommended.

PLEASE NOTE:
Since this is a Seedling Population (not a Mericlone which produces exact duplicates), the picture is for illustration purposes only. No two plants will be the same from this cross, and they will flower in a range of possibilities coming from the two parents.
