Description

The ever popular and highly unusual Psychopsis (abbreviated Pyp.) Mendenhall 'Hildos' FCC/AOS is a delight to see and behold. This is a mericlone of one of the best Psychopsis ever produced. This clone received a First Class Certificate (FCC) from the American Orchid Society—the highest flower award, so the flowers are of exceptional quality. The pod parent, Pyp. Butterfly, is Pyp. sanderae x Pyp. papilio. The genetic composition of Pyp. Mendenhall 'Hildos' FCC/AOS is 75% Pyp. papilio and 25% Pyp. sanderae. It has beautiful light green variegated foliage covered in fine mahogany markings. The flower spikes can get 18 inches to 2 feet tall and will produce a single large butterfly-like flower that lasts at least 3 weeks. It is a sequential bloomer, so as the flower fades another bud is produced on the spike. This can go on successively for many years. Some spikes have been blooming over 15 years! In addition, the plant produces new spikes each year as the new growths form at the base of the plant. Never cut the spike unless it is brown and dry.

Grow in medium level light (similar to Phal but less then Cattleya). It prefers to be moist but not soggy (similar to Phal), so sphagnum moss is the preferred potting medium. Water as the medium becomes nearly dry. Fertilize regularly and flush with clear water once per month to prevent fertilizer salt buildup. It is a warm grower and you can grow these together with your Phals as these require similar conditions. Never repot during the winter time, and repot only when necessary as this plant detests having its roots disturbed. It has been known to sulk for years to get even. If repotting must be performed, disturb the root mass as little as possible. Remove it from the pot, perform minimal cleaning and trimming, slip it into a slightly larger pot and tuck moss to fill the voids. This one of the most carefree orchids and easy to grow and bloom. Recommended for lovers of variegated leaves, beginners, and growers looking for something unusual.
