Description

We are head over heels excited to re-introduce this stunning clone back to the USA. These plants are from a limited in-vitro stem propagation.

Phal. schilleriana 'Maile Jeanne Tanaka' was awarded an Award of Merit (AM) from the American Orchid Society (AOS) of 84 points on March, 1 , 1977 at Hilo, the Big Island of Hawaii. Despite its early award, the flower still holds up to today's standard with a natural spread of 6.5 cm and over 25 flowers on one spike when it garnered an Award of Merit of 84 points. It is believed this is a natural tetraploid (4N). This clone originates from a sibling cross of a population of wild-collected jungle strain that was imported to Hawaii from the Philippines in early 1970s prior to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) coming into effect. It is reported that a keiki of Phal. schilleriana ‘Maile Jeanne Tanaka’ AM/AOS was sold or gifted to Japan in the late 1970s. Tissue culture was not advanced back then and often not very fruitful, consequently a keiki from the mother plant is easier to obtain and command a large sum. It is also believed that the clone ‘Maile Jeanne Tanaka’ contributed to the breeding that later created Phal. Hilo Lip—the first pink flowered Phal with a white lip.

Phal. schilleriana is a remarkable species from The Philippines famous for its 3-ft long branching inflorescence adorned with dozens of soft pink fragrant flowers and distinctive dark green mottled silver with fine white spots on its leaves. The leaves are purple on the underside. These plants are extremely floriferous, with a long branching inflorescence, sweet fragrance, and excellent species vigor. Its abundant flowers make an excellent cascading waterfall effect for hanging basket or mounting—a truly magnificent display. If growing in a pot, we recommend staking the spikes to support the weight of the flowers. It can be grown under lights or on a windowsill. This orchid is easy to grow and a reliable bloomer. It likes bright shade, good humidity and even watering year round.

Don’t miss this opportunity to get this extraordinary strain. Highly recommended for the Phalaenopsis lover, beginner, species collector, and collector of fragrant orchids. A welcome addition to any orchid collection.
