After years of trying, I was finally able to forge a happy marriage with Phal. Koda Twinkle 'Chocolate Drops' AM/AOS and Phal. pulcherrima to create Phal. Norman's Burgundy Twinkle. We are extremely proud of the result!
The pod parent, Phal. Kaoda Twinkle 'Chocolate Drops' AM/AOS (Phal. schilleriana x Phal. Malvarosa Valentine Pearl 4N), was created by our good friend Andy Kao of Kaoda Orchids who is doing outstanding work in breeding modern harlequin Phals. Phal. Kaoda Twinkle 'Chocolate Drops' AM/AOS and Phal. Kaoda Giant Crystal ‘FANGtastic’ (Item #MC2634) are prime examples. I first fell in love with harlequin Phal breeding in 1996 at the first American Orchid Society Judging in Tainan, Taiwan (before the time Taiwan Orchid Growers Association existed). I am amazed at how far harlequin Phals have come. The modern harlequins are a huge improvement. As an aside, Phal. Malvarosa Valentine Pearl is a hybrid with Phal. Judy Valentine (a big pink made by Norman's Orchids) and Phal. Taida Pearl (a velvet-red harlequin).
The clone ‘White Lip’ was selected from over hundreds of seedlings for possessing the best traits of its parentage and all species in its ancestry. Phal. pulcherrima contributes robust growth, compact leaves, heat tolerance, increased vigor, and ability to produce lots of flowers. Phal. Malvarosa Valentine Pearl contributes the saturated red harlequin color. It also influences the heavy substance, diamond dusted texture, and the longevity of the flowers. The color and markings on the flowers are uniform and very captivating. Perfect for growers with limited space. Will grow well on a window sill or under lights. We expect awards from this spectacular clone. This exceptional harlequin Phal is a winner and has great potential for awards. Highly recommended.
