Description

Phal. Norman's Blue Penang 'George Town' is one of our newest from our own in-house breeding. We are excited to offer this first release of this marvelous hybrid.

The pod parent, Phal. Purple Martin 'Montclair' is the Phal. Kenneth Schubert x Phal. violacea f. indigo. Phal. Kenneth Schubert we used in the cross is Phal. violacea f. indigo x Phal. pulcherrima f. coerulea. Thus, the genetic composition of Phal. Purple Martin is 75% Phal. violacea f. indigo and 25% Phal. pulcherrima f. coerulea. The pollen parent, Phal. mentawaiensis, was formerly a variety of Phal. violacea but it is now  recognized by Kew Gardens and Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) as a unique species. This species has a longer inflorescence than Phal. violacea, making it useful for future hybridizing to improve upon the short spike habits of Phal. bellina and Phal. violacea. It bears waxy, long-lasting, very fragrant flowers. Phal. pulcherrima f. coerulea and Phal. mentawaiensis tremendously improved the slower growing Phal. violacea f. indigo.

George Town, the multicultural capital of the Malaysian state of Penang, is one of my favorite cities in Malaysia, which is home to the amazing species Phal violacea, Phal. bellina and Phal. mentawaiensisPhal. Norman's Blue Penang 'George Town' has the best traits from the species in its ancestry. It has compact growth, exceptional vigor, capable of producing 2—3 spikes on a young plant with long pendulous sprays of sequentially blooming flowers. Flower spikes remain green for a long time and will bloom for several years. Do not cut the spike unless it is brown and dry. The blue/green color of the flower intensifies with cooler temperature. It owes its sweet fragrance to Phal. violacea f. indigo and Phal. mentawaiensis. It is easy to grow and flower, making it a perfect plant for beginners. Can be grown on a bright window sill or under lights. We have high expectations for flower quality awards. A must have in any modern Phal. collection. Highly recommended.
