Phal. Norman's Ausie Delight 'PhalFanatic' (Zuma Ausie Delight ' Montclair' x aphrodite subsp formosana ' Norman's 4N ') , MC2764 ,
Phal. Sohma Delight was created and registered by Kokusai in 1997. We are proud to offer this modern remake from our own breeding program using improved parents.
The pod parent, Phal. Zuma Aussie Delight 'Montclair', comes from a compot (i.e., community pot) that I was very fortunate to get from Mr. George Vasquez of Zuma Canyon Orchids (Malibu, CA) when it was released in 1980s. (Zuma Canyon Orchids was recognized by the American Orchid Society as one of the great orchid breeders of the world. Other honors include an international gold award for Phal. Bonnie Vazquez). From the community pot, many were good but the last one to flower was exceptional with amazing flower substance and color (a compot has approx. 25 seedlings). We believe most of the seedlings from this cross are triploid (3N).
Phal. Zuma Aussie Delight is Phal. Sweet Memory × Phal. venosa. There are very few crosses with Phal. Sweet Memory or Zuma Aussie Delight. I decided to make a cross using our known 4N (tetraploid) Phal. aphrodite subsp. formosana ‘Norman's 4N’. We struck gold when we combined it with our Phal. Zuma Aussie Delight 'Montclair'. The clone ‘PhalFanatic’ was selected for the gorgeous color from the Phal. Zuma Aussie Delight 'Montclair' and increased flower count and robustness from Phal. aphrodite subsp. formosana ‘Norman's 4N’. The flowers have very heavy substance and last a long time. Perfect for growing on a windowsill, under lights, or in an orchid cabinet. Highly recommended for any novelty Phal collection. These plants are award quality having superior parents.
