We are completely blown away by this breath taking hybrid from our friend Andy Kao of Kaoda Orchids. This is a fine example of their outstanding work in line breeding of modern harlequin Phals. I first fell in love with harlequin Phal breeding in 1996 at the first American Orchid Society Judging in Tainan, Taiwan (before the time Taiwan Orchid Growers Association existed). I am amazed at how far harlequin Phals have come. The modern harlequins are a huge improvement.
Phal. Kaoda Giant Crystal is result of crossing Phal. Kaoda Davis Pearl (having large, long lasting, 4-5 inch deep purple flowers with pink markings borne on tall spikes) with Phal. Join Grace (having amazing 5.5 inch jumbo white flowers). The clone ‘FANGtastic’ was selected from over several hundred seedlings for its compact growth, robust root system, ability to bloom on fairly young plants (in 3 inch pot), and impressive large flowers on thick, sturdy spikes. Phal. gigantea in the background of this hybrid is dominant in the color, spots, and flower form but not the size of the leaves. It also influences the heavy substance of the texture and the longevity of the flowers. The color and markings on the flowers are uniform and very captivating. Perfect for growers with limited space. Will grow well on a window sill or under lights. We expect awards from this spectacular clone. Highly recommended.
