Paphiopedilum tranlienianum , NF3132
Paphiopedilum (abbreviated Paph.) tranlienianum is a miniature species native to North Vietnam and southeast Yunnan, China. It is a warm to intermediate growing lithophyte found on limestone cliffs in evergreen forests, at elevations of 40 – 750 m. This population is a sibling cross from Mr. Bear of Hung Sheng Orchids. Miniature Paphs of this size are known as “Teacup Paphs.”
The leaves are 0.25 to 0.5 inches wide with a leaf span of 4—6 inches. The single-flowered Inflorescence is 3—5 inches tall. Flowers are 2 to 2.25 inches across. The dorsal sepal is white with a mahogany-brown central longitudinal stripe. The dorsal sepal folds over the pouch in the same way as Paph. spicerianum. The pouch is dark tan, veined mahogany. These will benefit from a cooler period when growth has finished. This miniature species has very peculiar-looking, long-lasting flowers with extremely wavy petals. It is fairly easy to grow and blooms in the fall and winter. It is a vigorous grower and will quickly become a specimen size plant in a 3-inch pot. It is free flowering and can bloom more than once a year. Highly recommended for under light, window sill, orchid cabinet, or space challenged growers.
