The ever-popular multi-floral Paphiopedilum (abbreviated Paph.) Shin-Yi Formosa was created and registered by Shin-Yi Orchids (Taiwan) in 2017. Mr. Shen, an educator by profession, remade this hybrid from square one. He started by remaking the pod parent, Paph. Lady Isabel 'Jumbo' (Paph. stonei x Paph. rothschilldianum 'Rex' FCC/AOS), and selecting the largest flower from this batch. He then paired this with his awarded Paph. gigantifolium 'Shen' SM/TOGA, which received a Silver Medal (SM) from the Taiwan Orchid Growers Association (TOGA).
Mr. Shen has one of the best private Paph collections in Taiwan and he has been collecting the best Paphs from USA, Japan, and Germany to build his breeding stock. He is not known outside of Taiwan, but many commercial growers from the island purchase plants from him for hybridizing, even some of the top growers in Japan. Unlike commercial hybridizers, he doesn’t shy away from doing more basic crosses like remakes of primary hybrids. His greenhouse has no evaporative cooling—just a roof to cover the plants from rain, so plants are toughened not pampered.
Paphs detest soggy growing medium; pot in well-draining media. Grow them in bright light and warm temperature with high humidity and good air circulation, on a windowsill or under lights. As with all Paphs, its roots are sensitive to salt buildup from excess fertilizer which causes leaf tips to turn brown. It is a good practice to flush the medium with fresh, clean water once a month and repot Paphs in fresh media every year.
We are lucky to offer some plants of this incredible remake. Paph. gigantifolium is very dominant in color, stripes, and petal curvature, as well as growth and size. These plants have the best traits of all species in its background. It has species vigor and heat tolerance. It does not need cooler night temperatures to induce flowering unlike Paph. rothschildianum. Excellent for growing outdoors in Southern USA such as Texas, Louisiana, and South Florida where summers are hot and winters are mild and frost free. Very impressive and eyecatching when in bloom from spring to summer. Note: this is not a small plant, they will become very large specimens when mature so be sure to give them space.
