Description

We remade this very popular classic multi-floral Paphiopedilum (abbreviated Paph.) Ho Chi Minh using Paph. delenatii var. Dunkel (Dunkel is the German word meaning dark), which is the darkest form of Paph. delenatii (sometimes called 'vinicolor') known for its darker foliage and nice cherry-red pouch color; it also has half the leaf span as the regular Paph. delenatii making it more compact. The Dunkel variety adds new genetic material and excitement to hybrids since Paph. delenatii came from one single specimen that has been self-propagated for decades and has become a genetically weak grower. Paph. delenatii var. Dunkel is simply FANGtastic! It blooms in a 2.5" pot with a flower size larger than the leaves!

This striking, new strain of Paph. Ho Chi Minh is more compact and produces dark, 4-inch wide flowers with very round petals and a rosy-pink pouch on compact upright spikes. The attractive glossy, mottled green foliage is very beautiful even when not in bloom. These exceptional plants are capable of bearing two flowers on a single spike—a wonderful bonus! Stems have cute little hairs. These easy to grow plants grow into beautiful specimens in a relatively short time and put on a spectacular display with multiple inflorescences when they get older. We have grown a mature plant with at least 2 flowers in a 3.5" pot, and another with 2 flowers and one bud. Flowers have an enticingly sweet floral fragrance—pleasing light jasmine with a touch of honey!

Paphs detest soggy growing medium; pot in well-draining media. Grow them in bright light and warm temperature with high humidity and good air circulation. As with all Paphs, its roots are sensitive to salt buildup from excess fertilizer which causes leaf tips to turn brown. It is a good practice to flush the medium with fresh, clean water once a month and repot Paphs in fresh media every year. These plants do not need a cooler nighttime temperature to bloom as Paph. delenatii is from South Vietnam. These easy to grow plants make excellent companions with Phalaenopsis since they have similar requirements. Grows well on a bright windowsill or under lights. Highly recommended.

PLEASE NOTE: Since this is a Seedling Population (not a Mericlone which produces exact duplicates), the picture is for illustration purposes only. No two plants will be the same from this cross, and they will flower in a range of possibilities coming from the two parents.
