Paphiopedilum (abbreviated Paph.) Haur Jih lsabel is a spectacular hybrid created by the renowned Haur Jih Orchids of Taiwan, who also bred some of the most amazing Harlequin Phals, such as Phal. Haur Jin Princess. This compact, multifloral hybrid is an example of cutting edge Paph breeding in Taiwan.
The pod parent, Paph. Hung Sheng Eagle 'Haur Jih' GM/TOGA (Paph. gigantifolium x Paph. rothschildianum), has a Gold Medal (GM) from the Taiwan Orchid Growers Association (TOGA), which is equivalent to the First Class Certificate (FCC) from the American Orchid Society (AOS). The pollen parent, Paph. sanderianum 'Haur Jih #1’, is his best sanderdianum with an impressive 36+ inch tall spike and exceptional dark colors on petals. The superior parents pass on the best traits to its progeny such as very good flower substance from the Paph. gigantifolium (this species has the highest flower count for all multi-floral Paphs at 12 plus), and Paph. sanderianum not only contributes the long, twisty petals but also reduces the size of the hybrid. The Paph. rothchildianum in the Paph Hung Sheng Eagle contributes the dark pouch color, impressive wide petals, and cold tolerance to the hybrid.
Paphs detest soggy growing medium; pot in well-draining media. Grow them in bright light and warm temperature with high humidity and good air circulation. As with all Paphs, its roots are sensitive to salt buildup from excess fertilizer which causes leaf tips to turn brown. It is a good practice to flush the medium with fresh, clean water once a month and repot Paphs in fresh media every year. Can be grown on a bright windowsill or under lights.
With exceptional parents used in this hybrid, this cross has great potential! It has medium spike length and compact growth, making it an excellent plant for growing on a windowsill or under lights. The long-lasting flowers have a heavy substance, long, twisty petals; tall dorsal and dark pouch. Fully mature plants are capable of producing 4 – 5 flowers per spike. Plants have cold tolerance and can be grown outdoors in warm to hot climates where winters are frost free. Similar to the species in its ancestry, these plants are slow to reach blooming size as seedlings, but once they reach maturity they flower reliably every year. As the plants get larger the flowers become even more impressive. Award quality. Very highly recommended for Paph collectors.
