Masd. stenorrynchos , NF2611
Masd. stenorynchos need intermediate to cool temperatures (50°F nighttime and maximum 73°F daytime). Ideally, in winter, they like a minimum of 50°F and a maximum of 55°F. In summer, the optimum range is 55 to 68°F. The temperature should not exceed 77°F and temperatures consistently above 85°F will weaken the plants and they may drop their leaves. Ensure approx. 10°F day/night difference to aid flower formation. Despite these recommended temperature ranges, we found our population of Masd. stenorynchos to be more warmth tolerant (with constant air circulation) for us in southern California.
Masd. stenorynchos like bright indirect light and need high humidity (75-80%). Provide air circulation at all times to prevent water staying on leaves as this will encourage leaf spot. These plants will not tolerate dry conditions and the medium should be kept moist but not soggy. We grow these in sphagnum moss. Their roots must be able to dry out slightly between watering. In hot weather they may need daily watering, but in spring and autumn weekly watering should suffice. Water in the morning so leaves can be dry by midday. The plants should be watered with rain water or distilled water or a very pure water source (such as reverse osmosis) as the roots are sensitive to high concentrations of dissolved solids (i.e., salts and minerals). Never use softened water as it contains salt. This population seems to tolerate the municipal water at our greenhouse in southern California. It is preferable to provide a humid environment than keeping roots too wet as they are prone to rotting. Using a small clay pot will keep the root zone cool.
Masd. stenorhynchos are generally active throughout the year although growth may be slower during the cooler months. Use a balanced fertilizer at 1/4 strength throughout the year; feed at every third or fourth watering. Do not feed during winter. These plants are sensitive to salts and minerals in water and fertilizer, so periodic flushing with fresh clean water is recommended. Although the flowering period is generally during the spring, it can flower freely any time of the year.
