Laelia (abbreviated L.) praestans is a charming species found in southeastern Brazil at elevations of 2,300 feet to 3,000 feet. L. praestans is often referred to as the Outstanding Laelia, but this alba form is even more outstanding. L. praestans rarely grows more than 5 inches tall. The pseudobulbs are thin and spindle-shaped. The single leaf is leathery and rounded at the tip. One (or sometimes two) 3-4 inch flowers are borne on each new mature growth. The petals and sepals of L. praestans are broader than most others in the genus. The lip is distinctively trumpet-shaped. It is a compact, warm to cool growing epiphyte that blooms in the spring (December – January). It is temperature tolerant, capable of withstanding hot and cool temperature, but favoring warm. For best results, grow with a little lower light than Cattleya-level light conditions and keep moist with high humidity and good air circulation. Delightfully fragrant and vigorous, it can easily fit into any collection under any growing conditions. Makes a great companion plant for Phals. as it can be grown under similar conditions. Grows well under lights or on a windowsill. Easy to grow. Another orchid in our wearable orchids collection. Very Highly Recommended for beginners, species collector, lovers of miniature orchids, lovers of fragrant orchids, growers with limited space.
