Encyclia mariae (Encyclia . mariae ' Giant ' x self), NF2072
A member of the Cattleya alliance, this spectacular species (originally known as Encyclia mariae, later Prosthechaea mariae, and now recognized as Euchile mariae) is found in Mexico at elevations of 3,280 – 3,940 feet. We obtained this wonderful seed-grown strain (a selfing of the clone ‘Giant’ which has the largest lip) from a friend in South America. We were extremely delighted by its vigor and compact growth. Its fabulous dark apple-green flowers are beautifully offset by an impressively large pristine-white lip with deep chartreuse veining! Producing up to three flowers per inflorescence, the 3”+ fragrant flowers are held well above its compact foliage creating a dramatic presentation of size and color. Requiring only moderate light levels, it produces its flower spikes just in time for spring blooming. Best grown mounted but can be grown in a pot; under lights or on a windowsill. It requires a cool, dry winter rest in order to ensure blooms in the following spring. A must for any Cattleya collection.
