Den. tetragonum (pronounced tet•ra•gon•um) is a highly unusual species. “Tetragonum” is the Latin word for “four-angled”. This miniature species is so named because its pseudobulbs have a square or rectangular cross section at its widest point. Den. tetragonum is found in New South Wales and northern Queensland Australia as a cool to warm growing, small to medium sized, epiphytic species. These seed grown plants are from a rare strain with dark red color and nice red lip.

Reaching 4 inches in height, the canes are semi-pendulous, clustered, 4 angled, widest at the middle, spindle shaped, carrying 2 to 3, dark green, 1 – 4-inch (3 – 10 cm) long leaves. It blooms in fall through spring on short floral bracts carrying 1 to 5, 3 – 4-inch spidery, very fragrant flowers that arise near the apex of the cane. The canes can rebloom over several years so do not remove unless it is dry and brown.

Plants are very easy to grow. It likes shade and to be mounted to accommodate the pendant growth habit and needs a lessening of water and fertilizer through the winter months. It thrives under intermediate temperature, high humidity and good air movement. Water and fertilize regularly during active growth, let dry slightly between watering. Can be grown on a windowsill or under lights. Highly recommended for lovers of species, miniature, fragrant, and/or unusual orchids.
