Den. cretaceum (syn.  Den. polyanthum), is a fabulous species found in the Chinese Himalayas, Assam, eastern Himalayas, India, Nepal, western Himalayas, Andaman Islands, Myanmar, Thailand, Laos and Vietnam in open forests on trees at elevations of 2,300 to 5,900 feet. It is a small sized, warm to cool growing epiphyte with canes that are 6 to 12 inches long that carry leathery, deciduous leaves. It blooms in the late winter and spring from nodes of leafed and leafless canes and carry a single 1.2-2.0 (3-5 cm) inches wide, fragrant primrose scented, long-lasting flower. Sepals and petals are opaque white, often tipped with pale yellow; the round, concave, lip is fimbriated at the margins; lip white on the edge, remainder pale yellow with some crimson streaks. Due to its pendant growth habit, Den. cretaceum grows best mounted or in a hanging basket. It needs high humidity, regular watering and fertilizer (at least once a day in summer if mounted) during active growth, and good air circulation. If grown in hanging pots or baskets, the medium should be loose and quick draining. Can be grown on a bright windowsill or under lights. To encourage blooming, cease fertilizer in October and reduce watering. Give it a cooler, drier winter rest. It is normal for the leaves to turn yellow and drop during the fall. Since it can bloom from leafless canes, do not cut them off unless it is brown and dry.
