Description

This showy, unusual, and floriferous primary hybrid Dendrobium has extraordinary, bizarre, fragrant flowers! This impressive cross was originally made by Roy Tokunaga of H&R Nurseries. It has been line-bred to have better growth and blooms. It has 10-12 inch club-shaped pseudobulbs topped by two or three wide, evergreen leaves. Up to a dozen long-lasting blooms are born on arching spikes that emerge between the leaves. It can rebloom on older canes. The outside of the flower buds and the back of the open flowers is covered in mossy-looking hairs and heavily dusted with dark purple spots. The front of the flower is cream to chartreuse colored with strong purple stripes on the lip. Both parents are members of the Latouria Section of the genus Dendrobium—a group of species that come primarily from New Guinea.

Pot these plants in a well-draining potting medium. They like regular watering and fertilizer, with only slight drying in between. They can grow beautifully in typical household temperatures year round. They are weather tolerant and will also be fine anywhere from 50°F to 95°F. We have grown them outdoors and found they can take temperature down to 45°F by keeping the medium dry. Can be grown outdoors in areas where winters are frost free. They do exceptionally well under lights, but on the windowsill prefer filtered light rather than direct sun. Keep them slightly pot bound for best flowering. A very forgiving orchid makes this an excellent choice for beginners.

PLEASE NOTE: Since this is a Seedling Population (not a Mericlone which produces exact duplicates), the picture is for illustration purposes only. No two plants will be the same from this cross, and they will flower in a range of possibilities coming from the two parents.
