Description

Stunning and breathtaking!! This rare species has remarkable variegated foliage combined with neon pink flowers! “Marmorata” comes from the Latin word "marmor" for "marble", here it refers to the marbled appearance of the leaves, which are attractive even when it is not in flower. This population is grown from seed and has robust growth and species vigor.

Formerly known as Doritis pulcherrima, Phal. pulcherrima is found in the Chinese Himalayas, Assam India, Myanmar, Thailand, Malaysia, Laos, Cambodia, Yunnan China, Vietnam, Borneo and Sumatra in evergreen, lowland forests along canyons of montane streams and rivers on rocks and in sandy soils.

Described by Olaf Gruss in 2017, this newly discovered variety comes from South Vietnam and Laos. It is a hot to warm growing lithophytic or terrestrial orchid, with a short, leafy stem, carrying long broad oval leaves up to 6-inches. Because it is variegated, it needs less intense light than the regular species. Grow this variety in bright indirect light and give it warm to hot temperatures, even watering and fertilizer throughout the year. Can be grown on a bright windowsill or under lights. It does not need a winter rest. It blooms from summer until autumn on an erect, tall inflorescence carrying many flowers of which up to 10 may be open at once. The flowers can last up to 5 weeks. Phal. pulcherrima var. marmorata is a must for all plant enthusiasts. Highly recommend for species collectors, lovers of variegated foliage, and growers with limited space.
