Paph. Chiu Hua Dancer (gigantifolium ' Huar Jin' x sanderianum ' Haur Jin #1 ') , NF3012
The ever popular, showy, multi-floral Paphiopedilum (abbreviated Paph.) Chiu Hua Dancer was registered by Chu-Tsai Kang in 2009. This is a remake by Mr. Su of Huar Jih Orchid Nursery (Taiwan) using superior parents. This hybrid is rarely available and we waited years for the remake. Mr. Su, who used to breed Harlequin and red Phals, has lent his talents in recent years to breeding Paphiopedilum; and has amassed an amazing collection and won many awards from Taiwan Orchid Growers Association (TOGA) for his remarkable Paphs.
Paph. gigantifolium was discovered about 20 years ago in Indonesia at elevations about 700 to 1000 meters. As the name states, gigantifolium has the largest foliage of all Paphiopedilums with mature plants reaching 3-inch wide leaves that can reach over 2 feet in length. It has distinctive flowers that have made it an excellent parent for new multi-floral hybrids. This is a warm growing plant that likes shady conditions. Paph. gigantifolium 'Huar Jih' is Mr. Su’s best and most vigorous strain.
Paph. sanderianum is a rare species endemic to northwestern Borneo (Gunung Mulu). This area receives an enormous amount of annual rainfall evenly spread throughout the year and is an area that has a large day to night temperature change and heavy dews. This species carries 2 to 5 simultaneously opening flowers, well known for its incredible long spiraling sepal petals that can reach 36 inches in length. Paph. sanderianum 'Haur Jih #1’ SM/TOGA is Mr. Su’s best Paph. sanderdianum with an impressive 36+ inch tall spike and exceptional dark red color on pouch and petals. Paph. sanderianum not only contributes the long, twisty petals and dark red color, but also reduces the size of the plant.
Paphs detest soggy growing medium; pot in well-draining media. Grow them in bright light and warm temperature with high humidity and good air circulation. As with all Paphs, its roots are sensitive to salt buildup from excess fertilizer which causes leaf tips to turn brown. It is a good practice to flush the medium with fresh, clean water once a month and repot Paphs in fresh media every year. Can be grown on a bright windowsill or under lights.
We are lucky to offer some plants of this incredible remake. With exceptional parents used in this hybrid, this cross has great potential! The long-lasting flowers have a heavy substance, long, twisty petals; tall dorsal and dark pouch. Fully mature plants are capable of producing up to 6 flowers per spike with twisty petals over 30 cm long. Very free blooming and easy grower. It has species vigor and heat tolerance. Very impressive and eye-catching when in bloom from spring to summer. As the plants get larger the flowers become even more impressive. Do not miss this opportunity to buy this remarkable remake. In my opinion, these compact plants are exceptional and award quality. Very highly recommended for Paph collectors
