Description
Dendrobium anosmum
is native to Malaysia, Laos, Vietnam, Hong Kong, the Philippines, Indonesia, and Papua New Guinea, where it thrives in lower primary forests at elevations of up to 4,200 feet (1,300 meters).
This orchid is a large, pendulous species with canes that can grow up to 3 feet long, featuring multiple nodes. It prefers medium to bright light, good air circulation, and moderate to high humidity. During the summer, it develops new growths that mature into long, arching canes.
For optimal growth, water and fertilize generously from March through September while the plant is actively growing. Starting in October, a distinct dry period is necessary for successful blooming. Discontinue fertilization and gradually reduce watering from late November through early March, providing just enough moisture to prevent the canes from shriveling.
During winter, flower buds will begin forming along the nodes of the canes. It is normal for the leaves to yellow and drop at this stage. Once flower spikes emerge, resume watering to prevent bud blast. The fragrant blooms, which smell like raspberries and cream, last about a month. It can rebloom on old canes, so do not cut unless it is brown and dry.
Due to its cascading growth habit,
Dendrobium anosmum
is best grown in a hanging basket or mounted for optimal display. Highly recommended for orchid enthusiasts.
