Description

Formerly known as Neofinetia falcataVanda falcata is a miniature vandaceous orchid found in China, Korea, and Japan, as a cool to cold growing epiphyte. Better known as "furan" 風蘭 or "fukiran" 富貴蘭 in Japan, it is particularly cherished in Japan. Called "Rich and Noble Orchids," Neofinetia falcata were once so highly prized that they were owned only by people of high rank, giving them the nickname "Samurai Orchids." Fukiran along with other Japanese orchids are particularly prized for their foliage which makes them a beautiful addition to your home year round. When they bloom, their delicate but long-lasting flowers fill the air with an intoxicating scent that is a mix of vanilla, honeysuckle, and orange blossom.
Vanda falcata prefer medium to low light levels, from 1500 to 2500 foot-candles. This plant can be grown on windowsills, given a north, east, south, or west exposure. Can be grown in a pot, hanging basket or mounted. Plants may be grown outdoors in the summer with filtered sunlight. Plants enjoy good humidity (40% minimum). This plant can tolerate a wide range of temperatures from near freezing (if kept dry) to 100+ degrees F. Can be grown outdoors year round in areas where winters are mild and frost free. Let the plants dry out between watering. Use ample water in spring and summer while the plants are in active growth and in flower, reducing quantities during cooler winter days. Use a balanced fertilizer year-round. Fertilize very lightly every other watering during the growing season, once a month during the winter rest period. These plants bloom once a year, typically from spring through fall. In Japan, Vanda falcata are traditionally grown in high-quality sphagnum moss typically on top of a mound. However, many people successfully grow them in a bark mix.
These plants are from a very stable seedling population from Japan, and have clusters of fragrant magenta flowers with a spur and dark ruby pigmentation on leaves and root tips. Highly recommended.
