Description & Details

Trichocentrum stacyi (previously known as Oncidium stacyi) is an unusual and uncommon species. It is found in Bolivia and Peru in tropical rainforests, high in the canopy at elevations around 1,500 feet (450 m). It is a medium sized, hot growing epiphyte with pseudobulbs that have a single, cylindrical, terete leaf (that can grow to 18 to 24 inches or longer when mature) which blooms in the summer on an 8-inch long inflorescence carrying 14 to 20 gorgeous, showy, burnt-orange and yellow flowers. Mature plants put on a spectacular display.

This is a fairly rare plant and rarely offered for sale. These plants can get pretty large and should be grown in a hanging basket or mounted on a slab to accommodate the pendant growths. The roots have lots of hairs, indicating that this species likes to be on the moist side so sphagnum moss is recommended. This species is sensitive to overwatering, so water this plant just as the moss dries out or approaches dryness. These plants do well in bright, indirect light; strong air circulation and high humidity; daily water during spring and summer. The flowers usually emerge in summer and last for several weeks.
