Description & Details

This species occurs in Myanmar, Thailand, Malaysia, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, Hainan China, Borneo, and the Philippines in semi-deciduous and deciduous dry lowland forests and woodlands at elevations up to 2,300 feet above sea level.

This is a sibling cross of two outstanding named “red” color forms of Rhynchostylis (abbreviated Rhy.) gigantea to produce an exciting new generation of reds. This is a new strain from our friend in Thailand, who has the best Rhy. gigantea collection in our opinion.  Thai breeders call this burgundy-red color of this color form “red”, whereas true red is called “scarlet”. This new strain has a compact growth habit with longer than usual foxtail-like arching inflorescences with 15 to 50 spicy-fragrant flowers about ¾ to 1-inch in size. The leaves are wide, thick, and stiff.  It is temperature tolerant and grows well under Phalaenopsis temperature conditions (i.e., warm to hot temperatures).  Rhy. gigantea grows best in very bright light, water and fertilize regularly throughout the year, and good air circulation. It makes a great companion plant for Cattleya , Dendrobium, and Oncidium. It can begin flowering as early as Thanksgiving or as late as Valentine's Day, and flower for 2-3 months. Definitely an Award Quality strain and Very Highly Recommended!

PLEASE NOTE: Since this is a Seedling Population (not a Mericlone which produces exact duplicates), the picture is for illustration purposes only. No two plants will be the same from this cross, and they will flower in a range of possibilities coming from the two parents.
