Description & Details

Commonly called the “Foxtail Orchid”, Rhynchostylis (abbreviated Rhy.) gigantea, has definitely become a collector's item in recent years with ever more unusual color forms being introduced into the marketplace. The cartoon form (sometimes referred as Panda type) is the most outrageous color form of Rhy. gigantea!

This species is found in Myanamar, Thailand, Malaysia, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, Hainan China, Borneo, and the Philippines in dry lowland forests and woodlands at elevations up to 2,300 feet (700 m). It is a medium sized, monopodial, warm to hot growing, vandaceous epiphyte with a stout stem carrying very thick, sturdy leaves. An abundance of incredible large, white flowers with strongly contrasting dark burgundy red spots and burgundy red lip envelop the entire inflorescence resembling a fox tail. Mature plants can produce multiple inflorescences. These typically flower in January and can last 2 – 3 months. A more compact grower than other strains, its sweetly fragrant flowers have heavy substance for a longer lasting showy display. For the best growth and flowering they need ample medium to strong light and even watering and fertilizer throughout the year. Can be grown alongside Cattleya and Dendrobium, as these have similar cultural requirements. Can be grown in a pot or hanging basket, with large pieces of bark and charcoal. Very highly recommended!
