Description & Details

Formerly known as Doritis pulcherrima, Phal. pulcherrima is found in the Chinese Himalayas, Assam India, Myanmar, Thailand, Malaysia, Laos, Cambodia, Yunnan China, Vietnam, Borneo and Sumatra in evergreen, lowland forests along canyons of montane streams and rivers on rocks and in sandy soils.

Phal. pulcherrima var. laotica is a variety found in Laos, a country in Asia that borders Thailand, Vietnam, southern China, Myanmar, and Cambodia. Likely the smallest among the species, this rarely seen variety is a hot to warm growing lithophytic or terrestrial orchid, with a short, leafy stem, carrying attractive short narrow leaves up to 4-inches that are 45 degrees upright and purple underneath.

Phal. pulcherrima var. laotica is very heat tolerant and can take high light. Grow this variety together with Cattleyas as it can handle the same light level and give it warm to hot temperatures, even watering and fertilizer throughout the year. Can be grown on a bright windowsill or under lights. It does not need a winter rest. It blooms for 4-6 months from summer until fall/winter on a tall, erect inflorescence carrying many flowers of which up to 10 may be open at once. The inflorescence rarely needs staking. The uniquely shaped pink lowers can last up to 5 weeks. This handsome plant easily forms basal keiki and creates a specimen size rather quickly. Mature plants can produce multiple spikes putting on a spectacular show when in bloom. Easy to grow and bloom, a welcome addition to every collection. Highly recommend for species collectors, beginners, and growers with limited space.
