Description & Details

Phal. cornu-cervi is native to India, Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, Nicobar Islands, Malaysia, Java, Borneo, Sumatra, and the Philippines in lowland areas. Chattaladae is the dark red form of the species.

The pod parent, our awarded clone 'Montclair' (confirmed to be a tetraploid), has large, fragrant, waxy, ox-blood red flowers, with soft chartreuse margins with good branching and tall spikes—considered the best in the USA. The pollen parent, the clone 'Red Wan Chiao' has a Silver Medal (SM) from the Taiwan Orchid Growers Association (TOGA), which is equivalent to an Award of Merit (AM) from the American Orchid Society (AOS). The result of this line of breeding is a new strain that is very free blooming, with a good flower count, and extremely dark color with a spicy scent. It is showing excellent species vigor with a good strong root system, and is very heat tolerant and disease resistant. It has a compact growth habit with self-supporting erect spike with good branching. Stunningly accented with a bold broad white lip, this compact species is an easy grower that produces multiple spikes, flowering on old spikes for several years in addition to flowering on new spikes each year. Do not cut the spike off unless it is brown and dry. This species is heat tolerant; easy to grow; can be grown either mounted or potted; on a windowsill or under lights; high humidity; air circulation; and warm to hot temperatures. Everyone should have this fine species in their collection.
