Phal. Jamie's Sweet Candy 'FANGtastic' is the result of the collaboration between California, USA and Taiwan. The photo shown is the first blooming of this incredible clone. Hundreds of seedlings were raised and the clone ‘FANGtastic’ was selected for its unique compact leaves and short flower spike height. Phal violacea f. alba 'Norman', believed to be a tetraploid, contributes its robust, compact growth, compact leaves and fragrance.
About 10 years ago, we were lucky to grow a population of Doritis (now Phal.) pulcherrima var. champornensis and help distribute this original strain to North America. From the strain, we received two Awards of Merit (AMs) from the American Orchid Society (AOS)—‘FANGtastic’ AM/AOS and ‘Norwin’ AM/AOS and a couple Highly Commended Certificates (HCC/AOS). At that time, Ken Lin from Chiayi, Taiwan was an international intern at our nursery. He was very bright and talented. We gave him a couple of our selected clones of Phal. pulcherrima var. champornensis and our remake of Phal. Tarina (Item NF2865 Phal. pulcherrima var. champornensis 'FANGtastic' AM/AOS x Phal. javanica 'Montclair').
Since his return to Taiwan to join his father’s orchid nursery, Ken Lin has continued his passion of phalaenopsis hybridizing and is working with me on many unusual phal hybrids including this one.
Phal. Tarina is a wonderful primary hybrid between Phal. javanica and Phal. pulcherrima. We remade this hybrid using our awarded peloric form Phal. pulcherrima var. champornensis ‘FANGtastic’ AM/AOS as the pod parent and our best clone ‘Montclair’ of Phal. javanica as the pollen parent. Interesting story about the peloric form var. champornensis of the species Phal. pulcherrima. It was believed to have been lost due to a massive typhoon that occurred in Thailand a couple years after it was discovered. Luckily, dry seed pods were collected before the typhoon and distributed to many orchid growers in Japan, Taiwan, Malaysia and Singapore so that can enjoy and appreciate this unusual species today.
Phal. Jamie's Sweet Candy 'FANGtastic' is perfect for under light growing or on a windowsill. It produces multiple upright flower spikes that remain green for a long time and can rebloom for several years. Do not cut the spike unless it is brown and dry. Flowers are waxy and last a long time. Don't miss out on this incredible plant, soon to be a benchmark for peloric novelty Phal.
