Description & Details

Paphiopedilum (abbreviated Paph.) coccineum, commonly known as the Brick-Red or Scarlet Paphiopedilum, is a small-sized, hot to warm-growing orchid species native to Vietnam. It thrives in limestone areas at elevations of 655–2,625 feet (200–800 meters), typically in fissures containing small amounts of humus. Some taxonomists classify Paph. coccineum as a variety of Paph. barbigerum, with the distinguishing feature being its more pronounced reddish coloration.
The plant features 4 to 6 uniformly green leaves measuring 3–5.5 inches (8–14 cm) in length and 0.2–0.6 inches (0.5–1.5 cm) in width. The flowers, which are 2.5–4 inches (6–10 cm) wide, bloom on a brown-purple inflorescence reaching 5.5–7 inches (14–18 cm) in height. Paph. coccineum blooms in late summer to early fall, with its peak flowering season occurring in the wild from September to October.
