Description & Details

This is a gorgeous orchid! Paphiopedilum (abbreviated Paph.) villosum var. annamense is a variety of the species discovered in Annam (now Laos). It inhabits the eastern portion of the range of Paph. villosum, from Yunnan and Guangxi provinces of China to Indochina in cloud forests at altitudes of 4,200-6,500 feet in areas with abundant rainfall. Paph. villosum var. annamense has narrower leaves than the regular variety. Its beautiful waxy flowers are smaller than the typical variety, has a dorsal sepal which is white with a central dark purple streak edged with pale green or yellow. The sepals are a yellow bronze-mahogany. The annamense variety is probably the best form of villosum with well-shaped long lasting flowers. Paph. villosum is one of the foundation species of "bull dog" or complex Paphiopedilums.  Paph. villosum var. annamense is very compact, has attractive dark florist green foliage, temperature tolerant, and can tolerate city water well. Note: Paph. villosum var. annamense needs a well-defined dormant period to stimulate flowering. Stop fertilization and grow drier and colder than usual in late fall. Nighttime temperature during this period should be under 60°F. Resume regular watering, fertilizer, and temperature once a bud appears. Excellent for growing on a windowsill or under lights. Highly recommended for the Paph. collector.

PLEASE NOTE: Since this is a Seedling Population (not a Mericlone which produces exact duplicates), the picture is for illustration purposes only. No two plants will be the same from this cross, and they will flower in a range of possibilities coming from the two parents.
