Paphiopedilum (abbreviated Paph.) haynaldianum is an elegant species found in the Philippines on limestone hills and serpentine cliffs at elevations up to 5,000 feet. It is a large sized, hot to cool growing species. This is a new generation of Paph. haynaldianum breeding from the famous Bear Nursery in Taiwan. Two of the best and most vividly-colored clones of this species were chosen to create a new and improved strain with compact, upright leaves and handsome foliage—half the size of a typical Paph. lowii. The clone ‘Bear’ was awarded a Silver Medal (SM) award from the Taiwan Paphiopedilum Society (TPS). At maturity this species is capable of producing 5-6 stately flowers per inflorescence in late winter through spring, making the ultimate “wow factor” with its large flowers bearing horizontally-held beautifully marked petals. Always a show stopper! This new strain is rarely seen in the USA. Makes an excellent companion plant to Phal. as it has similar cultural requirements. Highly recommended for species collector and Paph. lover.
