Description & Details

Paphiodedilum (abbreviated Paph.) charlesworthii is a species of slipper orchid native to Assam India, Myanmar, Thailand, and southwestern China at elevations of 4,000 to 6,500 feet. The region is subjected to drizzle and fog in winter and spring. In summer to fall the region has heavy rainfall. It is a medium sized, cool-growing lithophyte that has lovely variegated green leaves with purple spots near the base and on the underside. It blooms in the late summer and fall on a 10-inch long inflorescence carrying a single, long-lasting, 3-inch flower. The impressively huge, almost round, dorsal sepal is the fantastic result of this amazing line breeding of Paph. charlesworthii using exceptional clones as parents! The pod parent, the clone ‘Half Moon Bay’, is from the Orchid Zone’s line breeding. The pollen parent, the clone ‘Monte Vista’, comes from an outstanding Japanese strain. Both are combined here to produce very large dorsal sepal with the lacquer-textured flowers exhibiting a brilliant, deep, dark, rich color and excellent form.  Amazing award potential from this sibling cross of two of the best! These vigorous plants have multiple growths. Excellent for growing on a windowsill or under lights.

These plants grow best under intermediate temperature in moderate to bright light, 60 to 80% humidity, and good air movement. To induce blooming, reduce watering and maintain a cool temperature (55°F) during winter nights. Keep the flower bud in shade to enrich the flower's color. As with all Paphs, its roots are sensitive to salt buildup from excessive fertilizer which causes leaf tips to turn brown. It is a good practice to flush the medium with water once a month and repot Paphs in fresh media every year. These award quality plants are easy to grow and highly desirable.
