Description & Details

Formerly known as Oncidium ampliatum, it is now classified as Rossioglossum ampliatum var. majus. The native range of this heat-loving species is Central America to Venezuela and Peru. It is found in dry, hot, lowland forests at elevations up to 1,968 feet as a medium sized, hot to warm growing epiphyte with large, oval, mottled, tortoiseshell-like pseudobulbs. Dozens of 1.5-inch yellow flowers have a yellow lip; sepals have mahogany spots. Quickly forms clumps, growing into specimen size.

Grow in hot to warm temperatures, bright indirect light with moderate to high humidity, and strong air circulation. Small, young plants can be potted in sphagnum moss and grown in 4-inch pots. Allow to dry slightly before watering again. Do not allow roots to dry out. Switch from moss to bark mix when potting up into 6-inch pots or larger. Plants can also be grown mounted. Large, mature plants can be grown in hanging baskets. Can be grown outdoors in hot climates and brought indoors during the cooler months.
