We are excited to offer the first USA release of this phenomenal, rare, variegated Maxillaria (abbreviated Max.) tenuifolia that we obtained from Japan, where the plant it used to be sold at a price based on the number of pseudobulbs! This clone is named ‘Watermelon Marginata’ because the variegated markings on the pseudobulb resemble the stripes of a watermelon. The marvelous pseudobulbs of this clone are fatter and more plump than the regular variety.
Max. tenuifolia is one of those orchids that belongs in every collection. While the plants are compact, it quickly grows into a specimen in a rather short period of time. The grass-like foliage makes an attractive houseplant even when not in flower. It is found in Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Niacaragua and Costa Rica on trees in open or dense forests at low elevations up to 5,000 feet. Being a widely distributed species, it is adaptable to a broad range of growing conditions. Also known as the "coconut orchid," this Max. will perfume the home or greenhouse with its coconut-scented flowers and delight family and visitors.
The best temperature range for cultivation is warm to intermediate, providing temperatures no lower than 40°F. The long rhizome makes for a somewhat straggly plant that wants to "climb" out of a pot, but a good sized plant can be easily kept in a six inch pot. Max. tenuifolia is very easy to grow and flower. It is not particularly fussy about potting media. It can be grown in all sorts of media including osmunda, sphagnum moss, fir bark, coconut husk fiber or chunks, and fir bark mixes. Avoid having stale or soggy media as the roots do not tolerate being constantly wet. Plants should not be watered again until dry, or just approaching dry. Max. tenuifolia can be grown in a pot, in a basket, or even mounted. In areas where winters are frost free and nighttime temperatures do not fall below 40°F, it can be grown outdoors. Fertilize weekly, weakly (using a half strength solution of balanced fertilizer). Light tolerance is broad for this species and it can be grown in a bright greenhouse, under lights, or on a windowsill. Stronger light intensity will bring out more variegation on the pseudobulbs and the variegated leaves. Lower light will produce long whip-like foliage, narrow pseudobulbs, and a more straggly plant as it reaches for the light. Flowering season for this clone is summer to fall and flowers last for a week to ten days or longer if kept cool. Flower color is typically ox-blood red with a spotted lip. An excellent companion plant for Phals as it grows under similar conditions. After blooming, it needs a semi-dry rest through the winter months.
This highly recommended species is well worth growing and suited to all types of culture from cool to warm, shady to bright. A fine plant for beginners and collectors of species, fragrant, and/or variegated orchids alike.
