Description & Details

Dendrochilum (abbreviated Ddc.) arachnites is found only in the Philippines at elevations of 2,165 – 7,546 feet (660 – 2300 meters) often in bright light as a small sized, warm to cold growing epiphyte reaching 7 inches (18 cm) in height with rambling, ovoid pseudobulbs carrying a lance-shaped leaf. It blooms in the fall and winter as new growth arises with an arching inflorescence carrying 20 – 30 yellowish, cinnamon-scented, flowers up to 0.8 inches (2 cm) in diameter. Arachnites refers to the spider-like flower shape. There is also a red form of the species.

This species is easy to grow in cool to warm temperatures (40°F min. to 95°F max.), tolerant of extremes, but favoring cool. It should be abundantly watered and regularly fertilized during the active growing season, but must have excellent drainage, and the substrate around the roots can never be soggy or stale. During the cooler months when plants are not actively growing, the amount of water should be reduced, but the plants should never dry out completely. Ddc. arachnites do best in high humidity and good air circulation year round. Can be grown mounted, potted, or in hanging pots. Perfect for growing on a bright windowsill or under lights.
