Dendrobium finisterrae is found in Papua and New Guinea as a large sized, cool to cold growing epiphyte found on moss covered trees at elevations of 4,265 – 6,900 feet. Plants bloom in the winter to spring with eight to ten 2.5-inch flowers. The unusual flowers are covered with maroon spots and short, bristly hairs on the backside of the petals, are faintly fragrant and long lasting. Mature plants can reach up to 20 – 24 inches in height.
These extraordinary plants come from a seed-grown selfing of the clone ‘Green Dragonfly’, which is known for compact, robust growths and long-lasting flowers. These plants are easy to grow and prefer cool temperatures with medium levels of light. Keep plant moist and fertilize during growth. During winter cease fertilizer and reduce watering until new shoots appear. Grow in a well drain mix of sphagnum moss or medium grade fir bark. Can also be grown mounted. Excellent for growing outdoors in areas Like Southern CA, Southern FL, or Southern TX where winters are mild and frost free.
