Commonly called the “Foxtail Orchid”, Rhynchostylis (abbreviated Rhy.) gigantea, has definitely become a collector's item in recent years with ever more unusual color forms being introduced into the marketplace. This amazing strain from the renowned 4N Nursery of Taiwan is believed to be a 4N (tetraploid) form and comes from selected line-breeding of two exceptional parents; it has a cooler temperature tolerance than the strains from Thailand.

This species is found in Myanamar, Thailand, Malaysia, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, Hainan China, Borneo, and the Philippines in dry lowland forests and woodlands at elevations up to 2,300 feet (700 m). It is a medium sized, monopodial, warm to hot growing, vandaceous epiphyte with a stout stem carrying very thick, sturdy leaves. An abundance of incredible deep red/maroon flowers envelop the entire inflorescence resembling a fox tail. Mature plants can produce multiple inflorescences. These typically flower in January and can last 2 – 3 months. A more compact grower than other strains, its sweetly fragrant flowers have heavy substance for a longer lasting showy display. For the best growth and flowering they need ample medium to strong light and even watering and fertilizer throughout the year.

Can be grown alongside Cattleya and Dendrobium, as these have similar cultural requirements. This strain can be grown outdoors year round in areas like Southern CA and South FL, where winters are mild and frost free. Can be grown in a pot or hanging basket, with large pieces of bark and charcoal. Very highly recommended for collectors of the various color forms!
