Phrag. QF ula'ula (Haley Decker x Eric Young) NF2482
This exciting new complex Phragmipedium (abbreviated Phrag.) hybrid was registered by Quintal Farms in 2018. ʻulaʻula is the Hawaiian word for red, which is a sacred color associated with royalty. The pod parent, Phrag. Haley Decker, is Phrag. kovachii × Phrag. Saint Ouen. Its genetic composition is 50% Phrag. kovachii, 38% Phrag. besseae, and 13% Phrag. schlimii. The pollen parent, Phrag. Eric Young, is Phrag. besseae × Phrag. longifolium. Its genetic composition is 50% Phrag. besseae and 50% Phrag. longifolium. Phrag. QF ula’ula is 44% Phrag. besseae, 25% Phrag. kovachii, 25% Phrag. longifolium, 6% Phrag. schlimii. We are expecting large flowers (influenced by Phrag. kovachii) on compact plants (influenced by Phrag. besseae). We have found these to be free flowering. An intermediate to warm grower, it makes an excellent companion plant to Phalaenopsis. The Phrag. longifolium in the background contributes to the long flowering period; it is a sequential bloomer that blooms and blooms, and it is common for mature plants to bloom for three months or more. Phrag. QF ula’ula is an excellent choice for beginners or someone new to phrags. Easily grown on a windowsill or under lights, sitting in a saucer of an inch or two of water. Flower color can vary with temperature; color will be darker if grown cooler. Note: it is normal for phrags to expel its flower when it is done blooming while the flower is still in good shape. As these plants are seedlings, each plant is unique and may differ from the photo.
