Description

This is remarkable new strain comes from the famous hybridizer Mr. JiaHo Huang of JiaHo Orchid Nursery. Mr. Huang is also the Judging Chair of the Taiwan Orchid Growers Association (TOGA). One of the seedlings from this strain just received a Silver Medal from the Taiwan Orchid Grower Association, and given the clonal name ‘JiaHo Blue Moon’. This amazing new strain has a deep indigo color and the long-lasting flowers have a heavy substance. Some plants have flowers with a unique and unusual white halo around the column.

Phal. violacea is endemic to the Andaman Islands, the Nicobar Islands, and northwestern Sumatra. It grows as a small to medium sized, hot growing epiphyte in very moist lowland tropical forests at elevations from 325 to 500 feet. This species is used to impart its strong fragrance in the hybridizing of Phalaenopsis. This spectacular species requires shady conditions and high humidity as well as being watered regularly and should never be allowed to dry out completely.

This new strain has beautiful, deep indigo-colored, extremely fragrant flowers that are produced from spring through summer borne one by one in succession on a pendant inflorescence carrying at least three flowers at one time—rare for Phal. violacea var. indigo. As with all strains of Phal. violacea, it produces multiple spikes that remain green for several years. Do not remove the spike unless it is brown and dry, since it will continue to add buds at its next flowering in addition to creating an additional spike or two. The shiny leaves are small and compact. Can be grown in a pot, hanging basket or mounted. Perfect for growing on a windowsill, under lights, or in an orchid cabinet. A “must have” for any serious Phal species collector. Very highly recommended and limited!
